What is Pilates?

The Pilates Method is an approach in mind & body integration that was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. The fundamental principles focus on balance, concentration, control, centered awareness, fluid movements, and breathe. Pilates enhances a core strength that increases flexibility, coordination and special awareness. The repertoire is performed as a mat class or on specialized equipment utilizing springs for resistance. Pilates engages the whole person, not just the muscles. For everybody from an athlete to mother, Pilates will develop and enhance stamina, posture, alignment & core strength for elite performance to everyday activities.

Pilates VS Yoga?

Yoga and Pilates can be very complimentary however they are often different types of exercise. Pilates can be modified to make exercises relatively easy or targeted to make them extremely challenging. Yoga is an excellent training tool and often focuses more on flexibility whereas Pilates is more about the control of movement.

Will Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is famous for creating long, lean, fit bodies. There are many ways that doing Pilates supports weight loss and a trimmer appearance: Exercise burns calories. How many calories you burn depends on your body type and your level of exertion. Creating lean muscle mass, as Pilates does, is one of the best ways to increase your calorie-burning potential. Pilates tones and shapes the body. One of the best ways to look and feel thinner is to have beautiful posture. Pilates creates a leaner look by emphasizing both length and good alignment. Pilates promotes deep and efficient respiration, which is essential for calorie burning and tissue regeneration. Pilates is an enlivening workout that can help sustain energy levels throughout your day. However, it is not usually done as cardio exercise. Therefore, some people enjoy combining Pilates with cardio exercise in order to maximize their weight loss.

Do I have to be in shape to do Pilates?

No! Anyone can start Pilates and any level. It will be catered to meet you where you are. In fact, we like when clients find us and are just beginning their journey in Pilates. Then we can teach them the language of Pilates from the beginning.

What’s the difference between equipment and the Pilates Mat classes?

Mat classes really focus on core work and require you to support your body and are very challenging. Pilates equipment gives you a frame to work within that is often more helpful than mat but can be more challenging when springs are added or taken away. Working on the equipment can also target and tone specific areas of your body very efficiently.

What is involved in the Initial Trail session consultation or workout?

It is a consultation with a Private Pilates Instructor and also a workout. During the session the instructor will assess your specific body needs and personal goals and begin to teach you the fundamentals of Pilates. Because it is new, you will be working slowly and it is a great challenge. You’re going to love it and your instructor will recommend what the next step is for you such as more privates, mat classes or group reformer, etc.

Which is a better workout Mat or Reformer?

Both are fantastic workouts and compliment each other. Mat is challenging because you are on your own and have to control and challenge your body with just that, your body and mind. Reformer is a great workout because you have the machine to support you and also the added weight with springs to really work on specific areas of your body and challenge it. People like them for different reasons and it is a personal choice.

How often should I do Pilates each week?

The ideal practice of Pilates is 3 times per week. However, you need to take into consideration – time, finances, stress level and burning out. You can also try a Mat or Group Reformer class, providing you are approved to do so. You will see results quickly if you do more sessions each week.

Can I take a class instead of an Initial Private because I’ve done Pilates before?

We recommend doing the Initial Privates even if you have done Pilates before so you can brush up on your Pilates, get a great deal and do a Private with a teacher who will guide you to the right class for your level. If you are a Pilates teacher or have done Pilates for a long time (maybe just visiting from out of town) and are confident that you have the language and exercises you can take intermediate.

What is the difference between a foundation intermediate and advance class?

Foundation (for both Group Reformer & Mat) will move a bit slower and take the time to explain exercises so each client knows how to execute the movement in a safe manner. Clients are challenged by working on the fundamental exercises in Pilates in a deep and connected manner. Intermediate class is tailored to the more experienced student. Students will continue to work on beginner exercises while more advanced exercises will be introduced and integrated. Students are expected to know beginner exercises and are challenged by a class that flows. Advance level will challenge the client with flow, focus, concentration, control and stamina. The client must be injury free and able to do intermediate and advance class.

Why is there a 24 hour cancellation policy? What if I get sick or have an emergency?

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy because we are a professional studio and our teachers reserve the time and keep it available for each client. They are booked by the hour in each shift. 24 hours allows the studio and teacher to book another client and fill that void. We know that unforeseen emergencies come up. However, traffic, work and being under the weather are cancellations so please always cancel ahead of time if you fore see that happening.

How long do I need to do Pilates to see changes in my body?

In less than one month you will feel and hopefully even visually see a difference. Everyone responds differently but wonderful changes will happen if you commit to doing Pilates every week! “10 sessions- Feel the difference. 20 sessions- See the difference. 30 sessions- Have a new body!” -Joseph Pilates

Is Pilates only focused on the core?

Pilates is a total body workout and everything you do in Pilates is supported from the core (transverse abdominals, pelvic floor, spinal muscles and diaphragm make up the core). Pilates also focuses on breath, balance, flexibility, coordination, control, stamina, toning, posture and overall health.

I want 6 pack abs. Will Pilates help me ?

Pilates will do that and much more by creating a balanced approach to core strengthening that will tone and lean out your abdominal muscles and cinch in your waist.

I have herniated discs in my back. Can I do Pilates?

Yes, Pilates is wonderful for back issues! Our Rehab Pilates method will definitely help you to live a pain free life . Pilates is able to help in back pain treatment mainly in two ways. The first is by the strengthening your muscles and making them more flexible, while the second is through improving your posture. Pilates enables your joints and muscles to become stronger and more flexible. By doing so, you will be able to make them tough enough to withstand the strain and other stresses that happen as you are doing your regular activities. When your muscles are stronger, they can withstand injury better. When the muscles are more flexible, you have less risk of straining them when you contort your body into awkward positions. In this regard, Pilates would really help you in your back pain treatment.

Can I do Pilates if I have existing injuries ?

Yes, Absolutely, rehabilitation is our speciality. One of the key benefits of Pilates is being able to do Pilates with existing injuries. Our Instructors are expertly trained specifically in rehabilitation. Exercises are chosen or modified to accommodate your existing injuries. Please bring along all relevant medical referrals and reports from your GP, Physiotherapist or other medical practitioners when starting. This will help us to identify areas and issues we need to be aware of. With all pre-existing medical conditions, we encourage that you obtain independent medical advice from your GP prior to starting any form of exercise program.
